Finding better ways of bridging science and practice is one the keystones for ensuring the production of socially relevant research, today. In policy design and implementation at different levels of governance it is crucial to be able to define a limited number of rules in order to reduce the administrative burden. In the past this has typically led to a homogenization of policy practice that offered a limited consideration of the geographical context. This process has been critically assessed both by the research community and stakeholders. To overcome this constraint a joined effort is needed from research, decision-makers and stakeholders to find ways of supporting a more suitable and operational policy process.
The scientific community is asked to respond by showing its capability of delivering methods and tools that can support a better targeting of policies, notably providing a sound basis to assess the geographical context. Spatial typologies have proven to be pivotal in multiple policy frameworks at multiple levels of governance, from European to local, and including multiple sectors, as landscape, agriculture, territorial cohesion, spatial planning or conservation of biodiversity, amongst others.
Defining spatial typologies typically involves the isolation ?of similarities from reality and clustering into a limited set of manageable spatial categories, which should be able to describe patterns of spatial variance. Even though there is significant body of literature related to conceptual issues, the challenges arising from the definition of spatial typologies are multiple and diverse.
In this first IALE-Europe Thematic Workshop would like to explore the limits and the opportunities arising from conceptual and methodological progresses, highlighting the contribution of Landscape Ecology in these developments and to provide the space for close interaction between researchers and practioners to communicate and share experiences.

The first IALE-Europe Thematic Workshop will take place in 4-5 July 2014, in Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon. Oral presentations and posters are very much welcomed in each of the following topics:
Symposium 1 – Models and methods
What are the most recent methodological developments? What methods and tools are available? How to define categories for multiple purposes – linking social, economic and environmental processes? How much “simplification” is acceptable? How to best integrate different types of knowledge?

Symposium 2 – Data, variables and indicators
What is the availability of data that can support the selection of variables describing the landscape characteristics? How to derive indicators related with different processes? Are there novel ways of data collection, using technological development and using informal and alternative data sources? How to integrate scale?

Symposium 3 – Case studies across scales
What is experience is out there? Are we supporting a better policy practice? Can best practices be identified? How satisfyingly do they meet policy needs? Are there recommendations that can be formulated on how to progress?
